Responsibilities:
The Captain position’s main purpose is to:
- Train and lead by example to develop the crew according to all internal procedures.
- Maximize safety and efficiency by using expertise in planning and executing voyages.
- Bring a morale-focused approach to the success of each voyage.
- Maintain complete responsibility for everything that happens on the vessel and voyage.
Tasks:
- Use experience-driven knowledge of winds, weather, water depths, and currents to avoid other marine traffic, outlying shoals, and other hazards while operating the boat/barge.
- Ensure the efficient and safe loading and transportation of all equipment, supplies, and materials.
- Guide the crew and vessels into and out of berths and harbors.
- Direct the correct and safe fendering, mooring, and anchoring of the boat/barge.
- Use maps, charts, reports, and equipment to organize and plan vessel movements.
- Lead and coordinate all crew members.
- Accurately record all logs in an organized process.
- Source, maintain, and ensure proper use of all necessary equipment.
- Oversee and coordinate all needed maintenance.

Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to comfortably and safely lift 100 lbs.; This position involves lifting, pulling, and operating heavy equipment and objects.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, or squat frequently. Climb high steps/ladders should be expected several times per day.
- Use of, working with, around, on, under, and inside deck machinery is expected daily; work on equipment that is poorly accessible or in confined workspaces when the need arises.
- Must have the ability to maintain balance/equilibrium at all times and various heights.
- Ability to work in confined spaces for prolonged periods.
- The ability to work in all weather conditions and have sufficient heat/cold tolerance.
- Not deterred by grease, dirt, paint, water, etc., that may regularly be on your skin, hair, and clothing.
- Must be able to swim
- Skills, Aptitudes, Qualifications & Certifications
- Master of Tow 200 ton, Oceans or Near Coastal Endorsement is a plus.
- Knowledge of Deckhand, Mate, and Engineer positions.
